The Nantucket Atheneum’s Amy Jenness will interview photographer Eileen Powers, about her Can You Make Hair For Me? project.
When she was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2018, Eileen asked friends and colleagues to get creative and make hair for her while she underwent chemotherapy.
“It took weeks before I could view my bald head in the mirror. But once I did, I began trying to think of positive ways I could help other people through my art.”
Almost two years later, Eileen is cancer-free and has photographed herself in almost 80 hair pieces made from a huge variety of materials. Her images have been exhibited at Massachusetts General Hospital and at Artoma: The Art of Cancer in Chicago. In June, they will be featured in Blossom Fighting Cancer in Paris, France.
